Phone Network Compatibility Questions.

Switching Carriers

Many people ask what phone locking is all about.  Here is a brief explanation.   In some countries all phones come factory unlocked.  Meaning you can use it on any available network provider ie: carrier in the world as long as that carrier supports the same GSM Frequency bands that your phone supports. Some phones, known as Global Phones support most network in the world. All the new iPhones starting with the iPhone 6 have Global bands incorporated in the phone, so the iPhone will work in any country as long as it is network unlocked.  Too bad not all phones come this way.  Some phones are made for specific markets and only support a limited range of cell phone frequencies.   Even Samsung makes phones for the European market, the Middle east market, the Asian market, the North American market, etc.  So what this means is that the phone, even if unlocked may not work in a different country besides the one it was intended for.   Needless to say, this can be very frustrating if you are a global traveller or looking to buy a phone from an international market place online such as eBay.

Frequency Bands

There is 4  category of frequencies that are used for cell phones around the world, they are primarily. CDMA, LTE, UMTS, and GSM.    CDMA is almost exclusively used in the USA and Japan, on networks such as Sprint, Verizon, KDDI, Softbank etc.   LTE, UMTS and GSM is commonly used across the world, but don’t get your hopes up just yet.  It is not enough for the phone to support LTE or UMTS for it to work on a network, it has to also support the specificFrequency as well.  Here is where it gets more complicated.   The Common GSM frequencies are 850, 950, 1800 and 1900.  The common  UMTS frequencies are 2100,1900,1800,1700,850,900 etc.  Now that’s not all, it has to also be on the same BAND, like Band 1(B1), Band 2(B2) etc.  Too make this a lot easier, there is Online tools available to help you check this.

Online Tools to Check Compatibility

Nowadays there are many tools available online to help you figure out if the phone you want will work in your country and if it is even worth buying if it won’t work. There is 3 or 4 tools I usually refer to listed below in no specific order:

Network Unlocking

Now that you have verified that your phone’s internal hardware supports the network that you want to use it on now you have to make sure that your phone is network unlocked because even if it is supported by the network, the phone wont work if it is locked to a different network.   Network locking is a common practice around the world especially in countries where carriers provide phones at a subsidized rate when agreeing to a cell plan contract for 2+ years.  Now the carrier wants to ensure that you pay of your phone financing plan before switching to another network.  Most phones in the U.S.A come locked to their respective networks, although now many carriers will unlock the phone for free once the terms of the contract have been met.  I did unlock my phone which was on the AT&T network and used it on T-Mobile, here in the USA.   Since T-Mobile and AT&T both use LTE and had the same bands I was able to use it once I finally got it unlocked.

Advice about Chinese Brands

Since we do review a lot of Phones from Chinese Brands, it should be noted that many Chinese brands don’t support many international networks.  After all they are originally made to work in China.  So you will find even though they all come factory unlocked, and there is never a need to enter an unlock code, the phone simply does not have the necessary built in hardware to pick up the signal in your area.  Lucky, some chinese brands are starting to support more international Networks.  Xiaomi is a good example of this.  Many of there new phones are advertised as Global phones.  And like the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 that was released a few months ago, it works on majority of the networks in the world, including North America and Europe.  I personally have tested the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 in Canada on almost every network including, Freedom mobile, Rogers, Bell and Telus. Not only did it work on those networks without glitch, it also supported LTE and fast download speeds as well.

Apple Launches iPhone X and iPhone 8

Apple’s latest smartphones were short on surprises, but does that matter? Not even a little bit!

In the brand-new Steve Jobs Theater at Apple Park, some of the most powerful men in the world were as giddy as fresh-faced schoolchildren. Why? They were unveiling their latest playthings: the iPhone 8 and iPhone X.

Let’s start with the iPhone 8. Visually, it looks fairly similar to the iPhone 7, but with an important difference. That’s its all-glass back, which enables wireless Qi charging for the first time in an iPhone.

The cameras on both the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus have been improved, with 12MP rear cameras with new sensors, better dynamic range, and optical image stabilisation for both cameras on the Plus model. There’s also a new Portrait Lighting mode with powerful lighting adjustment options.

But of course, everyone was waiting for the iPhone X, and it didn’t disappoint. With an all-glass front and back, and a full edge-to-edge display, it’s the first proper redesign since the iPhone 6. It has the same features of the iPhone 8 and then some, including a new Super Retina Display.

With a 2436×1125 resolution, this packs in 458 pixels per inch, and its OLED display technology allows for the best, most vibrant screen in an iPhone.

That high quality screen – and new front camera system – allows for Face ID, letting you unlock your phone an pay for stuff using your face. And with longer battery life, powerful internals and AR mastery, it’s a big step from Apple.

ASUS Zenfone AR Review

Just two months after the ZenFone Zoom S comes ASUS’ most recent trial – the ZenFone AR (ZS571KL). This is the second cell phone to help Google Tango’s augmented reality engine by ASUS.

The ZenFone AR is one of the first to help both Tango, and Google’s virtual reality stage, Daydream VR. In case you’re utilized to mid-extend cell phones, the ZenFone AR’s selection of bezels, glass show, and catch positions shouldn’t come as an amazement, however it keeps the 3.5mm earphone jack in place. It additionally has an aluminum combination casing, and it includes a sandblasted complete with chamfered edges.

Stylishly, the ZenFone AR’s back doesn’t do the telephone equity. We wouldn’t fret the obsolete polished fake cowhide look (design is repeating, all things considered) however the normal buyer merits superior to anything a plastic impersonation when they are paying about $1,200 for a gadget. A cleaned glass back or aluminum back would likely be more appealing, and unquestionably less belittling to the two fans and changes over.

The show is a 5.7-inch, Quad HD (2,560 x 1,440 pixels determination) Super AMOLED with a 79% screen-to-body proportion. It’s made of Gorilla Glass 4. Regular properties and desires of AMOLED screens incorporate its hotter shading temperature. This trademark loans its vibrant appearance, which might be a favored affair for a few clients.

The ASUS ZenFone AR keeps running on Android 7.0 OS (Nougat) with its own one of a kind skin, ZenUI 3.0. ASUS got rid of the adolescent standpoint by picking single-shade palettes instead of the inclinations it once adored. Their notices dropdown and settings additionally have a cleaner look. The namesake of this gadget originates from its consideration of Google Tango, which makes increased reality applications utilitarian on a cell phone. Tango requires a blend of sensors and Google’s product, and it permits a cell phone to comprehend human ideas like three-dimensional physical space, relative separation, and profundity observation.

By a wide margin, the most helpful component that additionally showed Tango’s abilities was Measure (a Google made application), and it was restricted to the telephone camera’s sensing capacities. The other pre-introduced AR applications don’t misuse the exactness off ered by Google Tango, and neither do they include esteem like the case gave above. It’s a blended sack of insane substance, bloatware, and outright publicizing.

At that point there’s Google Daydream. Like Tango, Daydream’s common sense is constrained to the applications that are accessible in the store, yet it was no place as devastate as AR. The Daydream View headset and controller are very instinctive for most Google VR applications on account of the view-focusing highlight that additionally re-adjusts your controller easily. Recreations work best with the VR biological community, and it’s the main kind that functions admirably right now. Unfortunately, the Daydream View headset and remote aren’t offi cially sold by Google in Singapore.

The back camera is a 23-megapixel Sony Exmor RS IMX318 sensor. It’s bolstered by a six-component focal point with a gap of f/2.0, 4-pivot Optical Image Stabilization, and TriTech Autofocus – a mix of laser, stage location, and differentiation discovery self-adjust that appeared on the ZenFone 3. Picture quality is by all accounts comparable to what the ZenFone 3 Deluxe off ered. Great focuses are its shading control, and its general tender loving care inside the engaged zone. It’s adequate, yet at the same time underneath desires, as it hasn’t generally enhanced from the less expensive ZenFone 3 Deluxe, which we as of now weren’t too awed with.

The ASUS ZenFone AR has a normal battery uptime for day by day undertakings, and it’s suffi cient at playing out its planned AR purposes. In case we’re peered entirely inside the ZenFone territory, this is absolutely ASUS’s most intense telephone to date, regardless of the possibility that it has trashy imaging execution for its class.

Direct telephone abilities aside, telephone costs are unquestionably on the ascent and that brings forth certain gauge desires. Positively, it is normal you’d pay more for Tango includes as it requires committed equipment and sensors, however there’s the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro that can off er that for $300 less. You likewise won’t pay for a present leader processor any more. Along these lines, once more, ASUS got a promising-on-paper item past the point where it is possible to the amusement. The ZenFone AR didn’t settle our bogeymen from the ZenFone 3 Deluxe, and it’s recently no longer an aggressive choice in the current cell phone atmosphere for value, execution or highlights, even subsequent to mulling over Tango and Daydream.

Top Budget Smartphones of 2017 Reviewed!

Asus Zenfone Zoom S

Successor to last year’s ZenFone Zoom, the ZenFone Zoom S uses an aluminum alloy body with a sandblasted matte surface. The edges and corners are rounded, and it has polished antenna lines. The front features a 2.5D glass with contoured edges finished with a coat of Corning Gorilla Glass 5. With its 7.99mm thin profile and 170g weight, the phone feels light and sleek much like Huawei’s P10 Plus, and has a comfortable grip. However, the width of the ZenFone Zoom S requires you to utilize both thumbs to comfortably operate it.

On this device, you’ll find a vibrant and bright 5.5-inch Full HD AMOLED display. It exhibited warmer colors, though had no issues rendering minute details, such as highlights and mild differences in hues.

The current iteration of the ZenUI is more palatable with ASUS toning down the juvenile-looking gradients in stock apps. Other features include its USB Type-C port (at USB 2.0 speeds) that has reversed charging at 1.0A. The fingerprint sensor located at the rear worked rather swiftly, instantly registering our finger once it met the sensor. Do note that the ZenFone Zoom S has no NFC support though. The phone’s headlining feature is its dual 12-megapixel rear camera setup. The main camera uses a Sony IMX362 sensor, while the accompanying zoom camera uses a Samsung 3M3 sensor with a five-element lens fixed at a 59mm focal length (35mm equivalent). The latter is used for the 2.3x optical zoom effect compared to the primary camera lens. The phone’s software automatically decides when it should trigger the Zoom Camera, which we found more likely to happen when you set the camera’s Focus Mode to Continuous Auto Focus.

On its own, the ZenFone Zoom S holds itself together just fine as it marks the base level expectations from the phone’s design, feel, handling and general performance for a Snapdragon 625-powered device and good imaging out of the Main Camera. However fierce competition (even from their own product line) takes away any glint that the ZenFone Zoom S has to offer.

Oneplus 5

Besides a top-end processing platform, OnePlus 5 catches up to real flagships by off ering up its very first dual rear camera configuration, an AMOLED display (with DCI-P3 color space support), and UFS 2.1 storage in a 2-lane configuration. With its price tag, it’s quite a bargain, too.

You’ll find a 5.5-inch Full HD AMOLED display sprawled across the front. Color temperature on the OnePlus 5 seems very well-balanced, with great screen detail, sharpness, and vibrancy thanks to the nature of AMOLED screens.

The OnePlus 5 comes with its own Android reskin, OxygenOS 4.5, which sees some improvement for ease of use. For instance, older devices stuck to stock Android menus for some essential apps (like Settings and drop- down Notifications), which resulted in a design mismatch with the rest of the UI. OxygenOS 4.5 also features a built-in Reading Mode, which dials down blue light on the display while converting text and images to greyscale, giving it a sepia tone effect.

The OnePlus 5 is the first OnePlus phone to have a dual rear cameras setup. The primary rear camera has a Sony IMX398 sensor with 16-megapixels resolution. The secondary rear camera is a Sony IMX350 sensor with 20-megapixels resolution. The phone shoots sharp images with vibrant hues and accurate colors, but loses some detail due to aggressive noise control. Image quality is unusual for the high-quality sensors beneath both lenses, and OnePlus will need to work hard to get their imaging software right. There’s also In-Depth mode, which primarily provides digitized bokeh that helps to add a little flair to portrait photos. From our trials, the bokeh effect from In-Depth mode isn’t as refined as Huawei’s bokeh control before photo-taking, but it does the job if you give the phone sufficient distance to get the OnePlus 5 to work its magic.

The extra touches help the OnePlus 5 compete with the titans of this tier, but it somewhat misses the mark on other fronts that hurt its overall standing against true flagships above the $1,000 grade.
